Yves Saint Laurent wrote to Andy Warhol to clear up false gossip

After gossip spread through the art and fashion scenes in the early ’70s that Andy Warhol’s portraits of him, the iconic designer sent Warhol a letter to reassure him otherwise.

Knowing the chatter was upsetting Warhol, Saint Laurent wrote in the message — which was mailed from Paris on July 31, 1974, and will be displayed in an exhibition called “Letters to Andy Warhol” — that he had heard the “stupid rumors” about the set of four multicolored silkscreens, and wrote a short list.

It read, “I love them; I admire you; I am your friend.”

The exhibition, which includes a letter from Mick Jagger, will run at Cadillac House from Tuesday through Dec. 26.
