Olivia Wilde responds to twinning with Vogue China editor-in-chief at Met Gala

Don’t worry, it’s just a dress.

Olivia Wilde took it as a compliment that Vogue China editor-in-chief Margaret Zhang turned up to the exact same dress as her — but in black.

“Great minds 😎,” Olivia captioned a side-by-side image of the ladies on her Instagram Story Tuesday. “If you’re gonna twin with anyone, make it @margaretzhangn 😍.”

Zhang reposted Wilde’s message to her own page adding, “CUE THE STRINGS 💪💪💪🎻🎻🎻”

Both women were inspired by a vintage 1983 Chloé dress designed by none other than Karl Lagerfeld, who was the honoree of the night.

Lagerfeld designed for Chloé from 1963 to 1983, and again from 1992 to 1997, when he created the elegant cutout dress featuring a gold violin motif on the front.

Wilde teamed up with Chloé to revamp Karl’s original design by extending the hem, turning the cap sleeves into a cape and outlining the violin shape using gold beads.

She accessorized the look with gilded wristbands and a gold clutch, similar to how it was presented on the runway 40 years ago.

“Creative Director @GabrielaHearst lovingly reimagined the Chloé Spring-Summer 1983 ‘Angkor’ knee-length dress designed by Karl Lagerfeld as a floor-skimming gown in deadstock ivory silk cady, complete with cut-out back and short capelet, hand-embroidered cuff details, and embroidery in golden strass and tubular beads forming a trompe l’oeil image of a violin,” the brand wrote on their Instagram Monday.

Meanwhile, Zhang made her own slight alterations to the gown, adding a long train stemming from the neckline and gold sequin detailing along the hem.

The Vogue editor kept her accessories minimal, simply throwing on a pair of black sunglasses and a thin gold bracelet.

Wilde first attended the Met ball in 2013 and then again in 2015 with her then-boyfriend Jason Sudeikis. The last time she was in attendance was in 2016 when she wore a black studded Michael Kors halter dress on the “Manus x Machina” red carpet.

While this appears to be Zhang’s first time at the star-studded soirée, she is sure to become a future fixture at the ball.

Zhang was named the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue China in February 2021 at just 27 years old.
