A while back I ran into a fanfic based on Dune. The fic wasn't memorable or worthwhile, but it contained a line which stuck in my memory: "Atreides always pay their debts"

It sounded like something from actual Dune canon, but it's been years since I read the books, so I don't recall for sure. Is my impression (that this line is somehow canon based) accurate? If so, where does the idea appear?

Just to clarify - this happened before the movie release, so whatever impression I had was from the books (if it was canonical) Commented 23 hours ago

Certainly the Lannisters always pay their debts. Warning: TV Tropes.

In the original novel Dune there is a scene when Leto is interviewing the Fremen leader, Stilgar, in which he states..

"‘Sir, I honor and respect the personal dignity of any man who respects my dignity. I am indeed indebted to you. And I always pay my debts.

This may be the origin of that sentence in the movies. There does not seem to be any specific reference in the remaining original Herbert novels to the Atreides "always paying their debts".

  • Arguably, Paul & Alia were indebted to the Missionaria Protectiva. I would not argue they paid back their debt. Commented 7 hours ago
