Windows Studio Effects require a neural processing unit (NPU) and the latest Windows updates. Windows Studio Effects requires a Copilot+ PC with an NPU boasting over 40 tera operations per second (TOPS) to deliver a range of enhancements that elevates your virtual presence.

Windows Studio Effects allow you to add the following enhancements to your camera.

  • Automatic framing - Keeps you centered in the frame during video calls, even if you move around, ensuring you always look professional.

  • Portrait light - Brightens your face during video calls, ensuring you're well-lit and clearly visible, even in poorly lit environments.

  • Eye contact - Adjusts your gaze on video calls to simulate eye contact, making conversations more personal and engaging.

    • Standard: Subtle correction to adjust your gaze on video calls to simulate eye contact.

    • Teleprompter: Uses advanced AI to create a more natural and lifelike eye contact experience.

  • Background effects - effects such as background blur.

    • Standard Blur: Blurs your background to keep the focus on you, perfect for when you have a messy room or want to maintain privacy.

    • Portrait Blur: Provides a more pronounced blur effect, similar to a portrait mode on a camera, for a professional-looking background.

  • Creative filters - video filters to add some fun and flare.

    • Illustrated: Transforms your video appearance into an illustrated version, adding an artistic touch to your calls.

    • Animated: Gives your video a lively, animated effect, making your interactions more fun and engaging.

    • Watercolor: Applies a watercolor painting effect to your video, offering a unique and creative way to express yourself during calls.

  • Voice focus - Isolates your voice and minimizes background noise, so you can be heard clearly without distractions from your environment.

Notes: Only the following effects are available on devices with a neural processing unit (NPU)that can perform less than 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS).

  • Background effects

  • Eye contact - standard

Accessing the Windows Studio Effects settings

To access Windows Studio Effects, use one of the following methods:

Note: On some devices, turning on camera effects might have a significant effect on performance and battery life. These effects include Background effects, Eye contact, and Automatic framing.

  1. Select the Network , Sound , or Battery icon next to the time and date.

  2. Select the Studio Effects tile to enable and disable the Windows Studio Effects.

    Note: If the Windows Studio Effects aren't available in the Bluetooth & devices > Cameras > <Front-facing Camera> window, the Windows device might not have an NPU.

  3. If the Window Studio Effects settings need to be reset back to default, select Reset Effects.

Important: The Studio Effects action might need to be added if it isn't visible in quick settings. For more info, see Notifications and Do Not Disturb in Windows. If the Studio Effects action still isn't available, the Windows device might not have an NPU.

  1. Select Start and then select Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras . Or Select the following Bluetooth & devices > Cameras shortcut:Open Bluetooth & devices > Cameras

  2. In the Bluetooth & devices > Cameras window, select the front-facing camera.

  3. In the Bluetooth & devices > Cameras > <Front-facing Camera> window, turn on the desired Windows Studio Effects settings.

    Note: If the Windows Studio Effects aren't available in the Bluetooth & devices > Cameras > <Frong-facing Camera> window, the Windows device might not have an NPU.

  4. If the Window Studio Effects settings need to be reset back to default, select Reset Effects.

  1. Open the Camera app using of the following two methods: Select the following Camera app shortcut:Open Camera Or

    1. Right-click on Start and select Search .

    2. In the Type here to search text box, enter:camera

    3. Under Best match, select the Camera app from the list of results.

  2. In the Camera app that opens, select the Windows Studio Effects icon in the top right corner of the app to open the Windows Studio Effects settings. Enabled and disable the different options as desired.

To ensure that Windows Studio Effects is trustworthy, secure, and built responsibly, it uses models that were extensively evaluated, guided and trained by fairness testing throughout development.

In addition, the data set used by Creative filters include 3,000 hand-drawn portraits of users of various ages, genders, and races, each drawn to adhere to a style guide that was created based on a study of user preferences. For Teleprompter and Creative filters, great consideration was put into the product functionality for people with unique eye characteristics.
