Kolhapur: Four members of a family, including a pregnant woman and her two-year-old daughter, died in a fire that broke out on Monday morning in a furniture, electronics and steel shop along the busy Vita-Vasumbe Road in Vita town of Sangli district. Sangli police said an electrical short circuit most likely caused the blaze and that the victims primarily died of asphyxia due to suffocation from smoke and burns. The fire broke out at the shop owned by 47-year-old Vishnu Joshi. His family lived on the second and third floors of the building above the shop. The deceased are Joshi, his 42-year-old wife, Sunanda, their pregnant daughter, Priyanka Ingale (25), and their granddaughter, two-year-old Srushti Ingale.According to Sangli police, Priyanka and Srushti had arrived to attend the wedding of Joshi's son, scheduled on Nov 26.On Sunday, the family had gone out shopping all day and returned late. Their furniture shop was closed. The fire started sometime early on Monday morning when the family was asleep. There was a staircase leading up to the floors above from inside the shop, and there was no external access to the upper levels.
The shutters were jammed and had to be forced open to recover the bodies.Vipul Patil, the sub-divisional police officer, said, "The shop had beds, plastic material, and other furniture that caught fire easily, and the blaze spread rapidly. We had to break down the wall of the building to gain entry into the shop. The family members could not even reach the terrace. The son of the deceased owner managed to escape through the gallery. It took the firemen four hours to douse the fire."Health officials said when the victims were brought in, they had 20-25% burns and that death was primarily due to suffocation. "The neighbours told us that there was an issue with the electric supply in the shop and the house, which went ignored may be due to the family being busy with wedding preparations. Therefore, we believe that the cause of the fire may be the electrical short circuit," added Patil.
