Weekly Commentary (Updated Jan. 15, 2024): The delayed Primetime Emmy Awards are tonight and voting closed back in Aug. 2023.
There are over 20,000 members of the Television Academy. It’s safe to assume people in the industry are focused on the fight with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers and being able to secure a future in Hollywood, and not necessarily, giving out gold statuettes.
Nonetheless, there was a similar feeling during the nomination round of voting in June, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Still, in tight races in the acting categories, where “Succession,” “The White Lotus” and “The Last of Us” dominate, with other series bidding farewell after cancellations or moving on to new ventures (i.e., “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show”), there are many categories that are seemingly too close to call.
While “Ted Lasso” is the most nominated comedy, “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” are pulling out all the stops to take it home.
The limited races have many 50/50 battles between two Netflix shows, “Beef” and “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” Still, television movies like “Prey” and “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” have support that could upset in one (or several) key places.
The 75th Emmy Awards are scheduled to air on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. The Creative Arts ceremony will occur on Saturday, Jan. 6, and Sunday, Jan. 7. An edited version will air on FXX on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET. All events will take place at the Peacock Theater at LA Live.

About the Primetime Emmy Awards
The Primetime Emmy Awards, better known as the Emmys, are given out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Since 1949, the awards have recognized excellence in American primetime television programming. They are divided into three classes – Primetime Emmy Awards, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards (honors artisan achievements), and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards (recognizes significant engineering and technological contributions). The typical eligibility period is between June 1 and May 31 of any given year. The Television Academy comprises over 25,000 members, representing 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors, artisans, and executives.
Emmy Nominations voting runs from June 15-26. The Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates. All information is preliminary and is subject to change.
