Considered one of the greatest actors of his generation, Academy Award winner Leonardo DiCaprio has maintained a formidable presence in Hollywood and modern cinema. With a career spanning nearly three decades, DiCaprio has crafted some of the most memorable characters in film history, captivating audiences worldwide and helping generate more than $6.5 billion at the global box office. His success places him among the top 10 highest-grossing leading actors of all time.

To celebrate DiCaprio’s birthday on Nov. 11, Variety ranks his 22 best film performances to date.

DiCaprio is known for his frequent collaborations with some of the most influential directors in cinema, each of whom has left a distinct mark on film history. He has worked multiple times with Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Clint Eastwood, Baz Luhrmann and Martin Scorsese — the latter directing DiCaprio in several critically acclaimed films.

As of 2025, DiCaprio has appeared in 10 films nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. That figure ties him with Cate Blanchett and Jack Nicholson for second-most appearances in best picture nominees. The record is held by his “Killers of the Flower Moon” co-star, Robert De Niro, who has appeared in 11 such films.

DiCaprio’s awards journey has been marked by notable milestones. His first Oscar nomination, for supporting actor, came with his breakout performance as Arnie — a mentally disabled teenager — in Lasse Hallström’s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993). Despite widespread acclaim, it would be 11 years before he returned to the Academy Awards as a nominee.

In the interim, DiCaprio delivered a series of iconic performances, including as Jack Dawson in James Cameron’s box-office juggernaut “Titanic” (1997), a film that shattered records and cemented his status as a global star. He showcased his versatility again as Frank Abagnale Jr., a charming con artist, in Spielberg’s “Catch Me If You Can” (2002).

DiCaprio’s second Oscar nomination came with Martin Scorsese’s “The Aviator” (2004), in which he portrayed the ambitious and eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes. The film, which earned a best picture nomination, also won DiCaprio a Golden Globe for best actor (drama). He followed that with two standout roles in 2006 — as a South African diamond smuggler in Edward Zwick’s “Blood Diamond” and as an undercover cop in Scorsese’s best picture-winning “The Departed.” He earned a nom for the former performance in Zwick’s film.

In 2013, DiCaprio received his first Oscar nomination as a producer, in addition to a best actor nod, for “The Wolf of Wall Street.” His portrayal of Jordan Belfort, a hedonistic and corrupt stockbroker, made him one of the few performers nominated for both acting and producing in the same year. The film, a scathing critique of financial excess, was a critical and commercial success.

His long-awaited Oscar win came in 2016, thanks to his grueling performance as frontiersman Hugh Glass in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s “The Revenant.” The physically demanding role earned him best actor, while the film also won Oscars for best director and cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki). DiCaprio followed that triumph with a return to the screen as Rick Dalton, a fading television star, in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood” (2019). His portrayal of Dalton — an actor struggling to remain relevant in a rapidly changing industry — earned him yet another nod.

Whether working with legendary directors or exploring new dimensions of his talent, DiCaprio remains one of Hollywood’s most enduring and influential figures.
