leah,
i found your blog through free laptop scheme. very cool idea! . . . basically, i'm a recent college grad who loves writing web software and have been infatuated with the interweb all my life. the idea of moving out to ca to be a part of the next "internet boom" and the whole tech-culture seems so incredible but also a bit scary . . . i'm interested in your experience doing this so far and how your life has changed from college to now.
thanks so much.

Hello dustin.
I'm very glad you liked the laptop scheme. I'm really only glad you watched Diggnation if you simultaneously drank a beer. I am also a fan of the interweb but an "internet boom" sounds a bit frightening.
I could write an entire novel about all the crazy things that happened in those seven months between college graduation and now. But I think I have a better idea - a quiz to see if moving from the midwest to the Bay Area is for you.
Which would you rather do?
a) have a backyard or b) have a chumby
a) run into your mom at the grocery store or b) run into the Google founders at Burning Man
a) pay $5 at a kegger or b) have your drinks paid for by Yahoo!
a) eat corndogs and cheese curds or b) lots of crepes
a) have lots of money and nothing to do or b) have lots of money and spend it on rent
a) wish you had moved to the Bay Area or b) actually move to the Bay Area
Tally up your score. Mostly a's, sit back and drink a needmyspace.com for help dumping the girlfriend/boyfriend who is squelching your dreams. I hope that helps!
Cheers,
Leah C.

I'm usually pretty good about answering all the email that is sent to me. At least all the email that is sane and not spam. I only get about four emails a day anyways.
Honestly, I'm really tired of answering the laser-etched laptop copycat emails though. They go something like this:
"Hi! My name is so-and-so from such-and-such place. I saw you laptop project on Digg/Ars Technica/Gizmodo and thought it was a cool idea. Since I live in such-and-such place and have an old computer could I try the idea for myself? How did you get sponsors? Did you send them email? How many companies rejected the idea?"
While I am incredibly flattered to get this type of email, I'm tired of having to answer the same questions every time. So I'll answer them here in my blog and point these nice emailing people here for the answers.
Yes, it is fine if you would like to try some variation of the laser-etched laptop scheme for yourself.
No, I did not cold call or cold email any companies. It took three months of going to tech events around San Francisco and the kindness of my friends to come up with the sponsors. I could have never gotten all those company logos without the help of many amazing people (Nick, Tantek, and Cameron to name a few). This was the key factor and the reason the scheme would be terribly difficult to replicate.
Now for the webloggy part . . .
I actually just created the plan from things I already had: access to a laser-cutter, a hilariously old computer, basic webpage making skills, friends involved in the web software business, and pure frustration. So if you want to try your own crazy scheme, I would probably recommend finding what you already have access to, what you're already good at, and what you would actually enjoy doing. Then, start thinking of your own bad ideas.
And don't give up if your ideas turn out to be so bad that they pass Terrible But Great and go right into Actually Terrible again. The very wise Sun Dried Watermelon. Dehydrated WATERmelon. It was gross.
So, best of luck with all the crazy schemes!

I was way too busy practicing holding a mic and trying not to sound like a ditz to actually check out Macworld properly yesterday. Seriously, it's tough not to sound like a complete dork on camera. Thanks iPhone: 1.34 gallons

It's a little late notice, but I'll be at Your Mac Life talk right after the keynote speech and the Diggnation filming on Wednesday. Phew. Enough plugs for one weblog post.

Happy 2007!
Finally a year with a decent resolution. I've been annoying my friends with talk about it for several months now, so I might as well tell the entire interweb. My resolution for this year is to start my own internet company. Well, my own mobile web application at least. I quit my job at Django framework. I've got a to-do list, a domain name, and not a whole lot more. This week I'm really excited to buy a cheap server box to put in my apartment and to finish the GUI designs for several forms. If people are interested, I'll try to document the process a bit more on my new weblog. I love reading comments, so let me know what your New Year's Resolution is, or just have a good Django versus Rails flame war
Sorry to disappoint all those who thought I should sell ad space on some other expensive item(s).
