SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — The late actor and comedian Robin Williams has been cremated and his ashes scattered in San Francisco Bay, according to a death certificate obtained by CBS News.

The image of the death certificate, stamped ‘Informational,’ indicates the Bay Area resident’s ‘place of final disposition’ as ‘scattering in San Francisco Bay off the coast of Marin County’ on August 12, which would have been one day after his death.

The image of the document also lists the cause of death as “pending investigation.”

The story was originally reported by tabloids the National Enquirer, which also published what appeared to be an image of a copy of Williams’ death certificate.

In California, authorized copies of vital records such as birth and death certificates can normally obtained only by the individuals named on the record, their immediate family members, or other authorized parties such as lawyers, law enforcement or funeral homes for official business.  Other requestors can obtain only informational copies.

Williams was found dead at his Tiburon home on August 11. A preliminary investigation showed he died of asphyxia due to hanging.  Results of toxicology tests are pending before an official cause of death is released.

Williams had been suffering depression and after his death it was revealed he was taking medication to treat Parkinson’s disease.

There was no word on the revelation from Williams’ family.
