You’ve never used a Windows laptop with a precision trackpad then…

I do and I consider it a regression over the synaptics model in my older laptop.

As I said that hasn’t been my experience and not just on my own systems.

No magic, I’ve just found Edge a lot less responsive than Chrome especially on older systems (I still have a Core2 Duo)

I wear my original 360 every day, and will replace it when it dies (the back is really cracked so it’s only a matter of time before water gets in there and ruins it)

That’s massive hyperbole – Chrome consistently runs better than Edge in my experience even on my less powerful systems.

Properly working WiFi (that means an Intel card). Much more durable keyboard connector (actually the whole keyboard add on needs improvement). Faster storage. WWAN at least as an option (an absolutely baffling omission with the current model)

    Better in what way exactly?

How is Windows 7 better than Windows 10 you think?

More consistent and much more pleasant UI and search that works consistently rather than just occasionally.

Do you not think the Windows Store has some unique apps?

You didn’t say unique, you said ‘fantastic and unique’

Does anyone make high-quality mice these days that don’t have about 80 thumb buttons? I am constantly hitting those things by mistake, and I don’t think I’ve ever used one intentionally.

    Just unbind them

I think by "good", people just mean "better than IE".

I’m puzzled by this – there isn’t anything wrong with IE11 and it’s certainly much, much more usable than Edge

Windows 10 is better in every which way possible, save from driver issues from old/obscure hardware. It does not matter if you have a Microsoft account or not, Windows 10 is better.

In some ways yes, in others definitely not

This is an addition, welcome for you or not. There are fantastic apps that are unique to Windows 10 in the Windows Store.

    Nope

Well mine gets roasting hot if you do anything even somewhat demanding on it (even opening a spreadsheet) and the pitch of that tiny fan is incredibly annoying.

Regardless I’ve never had any such issues on my other devices with higher quality Intel WiFi cards

Depends on the network – sometimes its really unreliable.

Even on a network it likes signal strength and speeds are sub par

While those things are all issues things are far from rosy in Surface Pro 3 land in my experience – I’ve had issues with poor thermals, crummy wifi, unresponsive trackpad, wildly inconsistent battery life and bad keyboard design and that isn’t even mentioning the various Windows 10 quirks.

Three partitions is the bare minimum you’ll see – this is a Surface Pro:

Yeah that’s definitely worst case, that laptop is really sucky at the best of times and is literally the cheapest thing you can buy.

That said it was connected to a very fast internet connection so that wasn’t a factor.

Just did the update on a budget AMD A4 laptop yesterday – took between 5 and 6 hours all up…

    What for?

I use a Logitech G602 at home and an MX Master at work and am happy with both.

The G602 is better for gaming and has excellent battery life but the Master has Bluetooth, a side wheel and that great dual mode wheel.

Sound quality is fine already – it’s not like the existing pack ins are anything special in that regard anyway.

Battery life is a total killer though

If you can get 13 hours of battery life in a MBA with its current resolution, but only 9 with a "Retina Screen," then it’s a no brainer to NOT go with the Retina Screen.

I’m not so sure about that – 9 hours (assuming it is genuinely 9 hours) is still a lot of battery life and the current low-dpi screen just looks awful.

This is likely WHY Apple has stuck with the lower resolution display in the MBA.

I’d say that’s more because the MBA is a dead end product, It’s the same reason the fat 13" MBP stayed with an ancient processor and slow disk for years and years

I’d try turning the ‘High Dynamic Range’ setting to ‘Bloom’ or ‘Off’ in advanced display settings

Why would a hardware company want to make their own search engine?

Apple isn’t just a hardware company though – they realise that hardware on its own is nothing without the software to support it.

Typing on my ipad and as you can see from all the typos, the apple keyboard is one area they are far behind microsoft. I will miss the windows phone keyboard and many os features….

I don’t know about the Windows Phone keyboard, but the onscreen keyboard on my SP3 is inexcusably bad – I just grab the keyboard attachment if I need to enter any text
