A month ahead of its debut, Ava DuVernay's original series, Queen Sugar, has already gotten a second season order on OWN. The network announced yesterday that after the show's 13-episode first season, the drama from the Selma director and executive producer Oprah Winfrey will continue with a 16-episode second season next year.

"When we saw the first cut from Ava, we knew right away that we wanted a second season," said OWN president Erik Logan in an official release. "We think viewers are going to connect with the deeply layered characters and powerful story, and we are excited to be able to share with them Ava’s director’s cut on premiere night without interruption."

Queen Sugar was announced last February amidst the acclaim DuVernay received for Selma. Based on Natalie Baszile's 2014 novel of the same name, the series will follow the Bordelon family members Nova (True Blood's Rutina Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner), and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) as they manage a sprawling sugarcane farm in Louisiana. DuVernay and Winfrey have promised diversity in front of and behind the camera, with the show featuring mainly actors of color and each episode being helmed by a female director. Needless to say, this will be a series worth paying attention to when it debuts.

Queen Sugar premieres on September 6th.
