Zelda: Breath of the Wild with high stamina is the best

The Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild has a massive, open world. In fact, the game’s vast landscape is one of its best features. There’s plenty of ways to journey around Hyrule, be it by paraglider, riding a ridiculously large horse or running and climbing everywhere you go. The latter is my favorite way to get around (and using this map really helps). So let’s talk about: Why building for stamina is the most entertaining way to play the game Why it’s actually wasteful to spend Spirit Orbs on Heart Containers There are no wrong ways to play, but maxing out your stamina as early as possible is a better way to play. Health is secondary There are 120 Shrines for you to locate in Breath of the Wild. Each one rewards you with a Spirit Orb. Four orbs allow you to either gain a Heart...

The quest for the ‘perfect’ Nintendo Switch

What does it take to get the perfect Nintendo Switch? It’s not like you have much of a choice right now; the system is supply-constrained to the point that it’s unlikely you would be able to return your console and get another one if you found an issue with your purchase. The problem is that many things can go wrong, which is leading to fans online comparing their systems to see who was able to get the “perfect” Switch. So how does one know if they have this mythical, ideal Switch? You want to get a system that doesn’t have any issues with the left Joy-Con losing connection, but you also want to get a system that doesn’t have any stuck or dead pixels. The latter happens with some regularity on just about any piece of electronics that has a screen, and there’s next to nothing you can...

Zodiac is still David Fincher’s best movie 10 years later

David Fincher has a long resume of successful, influential and critically-acclaimed films. From 1995’s Seven to 1999’s Fight Club to 2014’s Gone Girl, Fincher has created a body of work that defines his talent as a director and writer, but none so much as his most underrated film, the 2007 thriller Zodiac. It just so happens that Zodiac, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month, is also the best film Fincher has ever made. This can be taken as a strong sentiment. Movies are a subjective experience and while Zodiac may be my personal favorite, there’s no reason The Social Network can’t be yours. When talking about this piece, many Polygon writers and editors jumped in to defend what they believed to be Fincher’s best work. As I said to them, and as I’ll say to you, your...

Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s early game is easy to grind for great loot

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an enormous game with an open world full of places to explore and stuff that will kill you. These kinds of challenges will be familiar if you’ve played recent entries in the Elder Scrolls or Fallout series, but the game might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a casual Nintendo fan. I’m going to help by pointing out ways to increase your power quickly, as well as explain the most efficient ways to get the stuff you need to undertake the game’s challenges. This information could be seen as spoilers if you want to figure everything out for yourself, so this is your warning. The first step is ... Identify your needs It’s best to think about open world games as having two interwoven progression paths. The first is the narrative; following the quests...

Twitch introduces its own Twitter-like feed, but it needs to learn from Twitter’s mistakes

Twitch’s newest social feature, Pulse, is essentially a Facebook or Twitter feed tailored exclusively for the company’s millions of streamers and viewers. But like Twitter quickly realized — and has not been able to solve in the 11 years it has been around — having a platform that thrives on being able to interact with whoever you want, and essentially say whatever you want, will result in harassment that must be addressed. Solving a known problem The Pulse feature is described by Twitch as, “a place where streamers can post and engage with all of their followers and the greater Twitch community right from the Twitch front page,” essentially promoting a more intimate, ongoing connection between talent and fans. If the concept seems similar, that’s because it’s the same way Twitter...

Nintendo Switch launch sales are good news — but not great news yet

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed that the Nintendo Switch has sold faster than any other Nintendo system in the Americas, which is pretty good news if you’re a Nintendo fan. But it’s not an indication that the company is bouncing back from the relatively tame hardware sales of the Wii U, at least not yet. The system, anecdotally, has sold out at most major retailers since launch. As of now, it also can’t be purchased online, except through third-party resellers. It would be bad news if Nintendo hadn’t sold out its initial allocation in the United States. Still, we have no way of knowing if Nintendo has managed to simply get more units on store shelves than it did for previous console launches. There’s also no way to tell if early launch week interest is...

The Switch’s friend list is terrible and useless at launch

Reviews of the Nintendo Switch hardware are often quick to mention that the console’s firmware still seems unfinished, and that’s particularly evident with the system’s online features. As of now you can buy games online, which is nice, and add friends for the purpose of ... well, nothing? We’re not knocking the limited internet capabilities of the Switch, to be clear. Nintendo has been upfront about the console’s still-to-come multiplayer options, some of which will be housed in a mobile app. That situation isn’t optimal, but it wasn’t a surprise. Knowing that something will be unfinished doesn’t make up for the pointless experience that is the friend list itself, however. Allegra Frank/Polygon This is the extremely, painstakingly dull Switch friend list. I...

What if Trump was also a Gamer in Chief?

President Donald Trump sat in front of his laptop in a white bathrobe. He didn’t like computers much, and preferred to do almost everything the old way – write letters, sign in ink, make phone calls and close deals verbally. To him, computers were an unnecessary burden, a complex world that introduced many risks: cyber attacks, rogue Twitter accounts, so much of it messy and frankly dangerous. But this time was different. Time had flown by and he’d already missed his morning intelligence briefing. He didn’t glance at his mobile phone or watch the news as he did every morning. This experience was captivating, nothing like he had seen before. It was day 5 in the game and President Trump was playing as an immigration officer. The new and draconic regulations were piling up and with them...

The Nintendo Switch’s kickstand makes the worst sound possible

The Nintendo Switch screen, which I guess you could call the console itself, has a kickstand so it can stand, unsupported, on any hard surface. This is great if you’d like to play with a friend while you both look at the screen. Or if you’re playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild in the bathtub and only want to risk dropping the controller in the water. Which is something I’ve never done, so I can’t possibly know it’s amazing and the best use of the system. Anyway. The problem is that the kickstand itself is rather small, so the system may fall over unless the surface you’re trying to set it on is rather firm and flat. The other, more serious problem is that deploying the kickstand makes the worst noise you have ever heard in your life. I was sure that I had broken it the first time I...

Manchester by the Sea and the everyday act of almost killing your children

I was in Savannah, Georgia, the first time I remember almost killing one of my kids. My wife and I were fussing over a map on the sidewalk, and my middle kid had toddled into the street. A stranger grabbed the child’s arm and pulled him back right before a car sped past. I thanked the nice old man, my face pale. Someone else’s attention had saved my kid’s life; it was one of those acts of everyday heroism that is rarely rewarded. I have five children and could tell you a dozen such stories. All good parents remember at least a few times they almost killed their children. In my experience, the parents who could learn the most from those incidents would likely claim it has never happened to them. All the good parents I know are afraid they are terrible parents. All the parents that...

The Nintendo Switch’s menus are uncharacteristically boring, for good reason

The Nintendo Switch’s user experience is oddly boring for a Nintendo console. It helps that the Switch is both the most innovative and most un-Nintendo console I’ve played. We mentioned that “the Switch’s interface is beautifully simple and easily navigable, somewhere between a clean tablet interface and something more appropriate to a console” in our review of the system. There’s not even any music in the eShop, which seems like a strange omission for a Nintendo system. Once you have the Switch in your hands for a while however, you’ll understand the design decision. The simple interface feels like it was meant mimic user interface standards most of us have become accustomed to with smartphones and tablets. Those interfaces are devoid of the bells and whistles usually found on...

Nintendo's indie program treads fun — but very safe — ground

With more than 60 games due in 2017, Nintendo is positioning the Switch as a must-have for indie devotees. But taking a closer look at the console’s indie catalogue shows that, while it’s a typically fun array of retro-styled shooters and platformers, Nintendo isn’t willing to really switch up its image. Nintendo showcased several of its most promising indies during Game Developers Conference this week, with a handful of the 60-plus games playable on the show floor. These include the familiar — Shovel Knight and The Binding of Isaac — and games that are new but … well, still familiar. Retro-style revivalist games make up the bulk of the initial lineup, as has become par for the course with Nintendo consoles. Games like the adorable roguelike Tumbleseed and Snake Pass, a take on the...

Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine changed the face of superhero cinema before it was cool

Fox’s X-Men is generally regarded as the movie that began the rise of the modern superhero films, after the 90s damn near killed it. It’s an incorrect claim that honestly should go to the first Blade movie, but the X-film was a first in modern superhero movies in one regard: the inclusion of Wolverine. In doing so, the X-Men and Fox became a powerhouse in the superhero movie genre, and while there are other factors that play into it, it’d be hard to deny that Hugh Jackman wasn’t the biggest of them all. Unless you were into the Australian acting scene at the time, you likely had no idea who Hugh Jackman was in the year 2000. The role of Wolverine was originally intended for Dougray Scott (who had to depart from the film when Mission: Impossible II went over schedule), and Jackman was...

Legion and Logan mark a turning point for superhero cinema

Superheroes have conquered Hollywood in the seventeen years since X-Men, but there’s still a strain of performance anxiety running through the industry. Comic book movies and TV shows are always laying the groundwork for another sequel, dropping Easter eggs as if they’re afraid that the Marvel Universe will stop existing if it forgets to reference itself every twenty minutes. That’s about to change with the release of Logan and the recent debut of Legion. The former is not a superhero movie as much as it’s a road movie that happens to star Wolverine, with imagery that owes more to Unforgiven than Iron Man. Similarly, Legion is a TV show about a mutant struggling with mental illness. The fact that David Haller is the son of X-Men patriarch Charles Xavier is only tangentially important. T...

Nintendo Switch's use of hated friend codes a bad sign for system's first year

"There are no friend codes within what we're doing," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said in a January interview with CNET. And there was much rejoicing. Imagine our surprise when the day-one system update for the Nintendo Switch added friend codes. What the living hell, Nintendo? The company created the hated system of 12-digit numbers back in 2006 with the launch of the Wii, which means fans have despised friend codes for over a decade. It felt like a throwback then, and it feels negligent to the point of incompetence now. Why allow people to friend others by knowing their username when a long, random string of numbers is so much more annoying? As of this writing, there are four ways to add friends on your Switch: Search for local users Search for users you’ve...

Jim Sterling was sued for making fun of a game, and it was a bad idea

Game critic Jim Sterling and the somewhat infamous game developer James Romine of Digital Homicide have exchanged legal blows since 2014. They fought over damage to Romine’s reputation allegedly inflicted by Sterling’s videos about the studio’s work, otherwise known as libel or defamation. The result was anti-climactic: The parties settled and the case was dismissed with prejudice in federal court on Feb. 21. Many are lauding this as a victory for Sterling and free speech. However, from a legal perspective, a settlement is hardly a conclusive outcome on the merits of the case. There are still pearls of wisdom we can glean from the matter. From the perspective of a video game attorney, going to court is rarely, if ever, the optimal outcome. Settlement, and in turn identifying the...
