Michael Fassbender was first introduced to fans as David, the synthetic android in Prometheus, but his newest role is an updated version of the David-8 synthetic line, simply called Walter.
When it was confirmed that Fassbender would be returning to the franchise for Alien: Covenant, most assumed he would be reprising his role as David. David was one of the only survivors from the failed Prometheus expedition, and it made sense that Fassbender would be playing the same character.
A couple of weeks ago, however, 20th Century Fox released a prologue for Alien: Covenant, which confirmed that Fassbender would be playing a new synthetic android named Walter. Not much is known about him, other than he’s aboard the Covenant and a member of the team going out on an expedition to explore a new, undiscovered paradise.
Today, Fox released a new video exploring Walter a little more. The clip mainly focuses on Walter’s creation, as a team of scientists mould him into the recognizable synthetic he’s seen as in Covenant. At his core, Walter is powered by an AMD chipset, according to what we can only imagine is a sponsored a press release. The clip ends with the option to “Reserve” Walter, a synthetic defined by Weyland-Yutani (the company who designed him) as a serving android.
Credit should also be given to 20th Century Fox for the clever bit of legalese that appears both at the end of the featurette and on the reserve page. At the end of the video, there are a number of stipulations the studio advises potential buyers they must comply with in order to successfully complete the order.
“Matchmaking interview and DNA screening required,” the statement reads. “Customers with genetic abnormalities may not meet requirements for safety certification. No refunds after consciousness imprint. Default payments will forfeit DNA rights in perpetuity.” On the reserve page, 20th Century Fox adds that, unfortunately, clicking on the “reserve” option will not result in users receiving their own Walter synthetic.
Fassbender has previously said that just because he’s playing Walter doesn’t mean David is dead. In an interview with The Irish Times last year, Fassbender confirmed he would be playing both synthetics, but it’s unclear how the two androids will co-exist.
Alien: Covenant will be released on May 19.
