Spider-Man spinoff Venom coming to movie theaters in 2018

Sony Pictures is bringing Spider-Man’s longtime nemesis Venom to movie theaters in a stand-alone film next year. Venom will be hit theaters Oct. 5, 2018, according to a report from Variety. Venom was one of a handful of Spider-Man-related projects in the works at Sony prior to a deal struck with Marvel Studios to bring the webslinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While other projects, like a movie based on the supervillain team Sinister Six, were scrapped, Venom has persisted in some form of development through the years. It’s not clear whether the 2018 Venom movie will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or if it will feature Tom Holland’s take on Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Homecoming, the next stand-alone Spidey film, hits theaters July 7, 2017. Holland signed on for at...

League of Legends director: LGBT characters will appear in the game ‘at some point’

A couple of weeks ago at the Game Developers Conference, League of Legends design director Greg Street gave a talk on the constant struggle to balance an incredibly complex game like League. Before that talk, Polygon spoke with Street on a wide variety of topics, from class updates to upcoming champion redesigns. During that conversation, we got onto the topic of the growing fandom surrounding different characters in League of Legends, and how some parts of the fan base may not see much representation in game yet. So will the game see champions who are openly identified as not straight? Street says yes, eventually. “We owe it to the players and, I think, to the world to do something like that,” Street said. “What I don’t want to do is be like, ‘Okay, team, next character, whatever you...

Sonic Mania delayed to summer

Sonic the Hedgehog fans will have to wait a little longer for the character’s next 2D adventure. Sega announced at SXSW today that Sonic Mania has been delayed from its spring release window to sometime this summer. While that may be bad news for impatient Sonic enthusiasts, it will likely result in a better product. And to dull the pain of the delay, Sega revealed a new stage for Sonic Mania, Flying Battery Zone, in a brief gameplay trailer. Flying Battery Zone appeared previously in Sonic & Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. Sonic Mania, which is being developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games in collaboration with Sega and Christian Whitehead, is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One. For a look at why Sonic Mania is one of Nick Robinson’s...

The most popular Wii emulator now does ‘the unthinkable’

The team behind Dolphin, the best-known, most technically stunning Wii and Gamecube emulator, just added an impressive feature in its latest update. Users of the free PC software can now access the Wii Shop Channel. Downloading demos and even buying WiiWare and Virtual Consoles games is now possible through the emulator. “Getting to the point where we could go shopping on Dolphin was a long and tumultuous one,” developer JMC47 wrote of the update, which is broken down in the video above. “We couldn't even connect to the update servers a few weeks ago, and had little idea why.” After several weeks of tinkering with the software, Dolphin finally supports the Wii Shop Channel as of today’s version. The team is still working to perfect emulation of the eShop, but anyone with Dolphin can...

Watch Daydream VR exploration game Eclipse in action

Eclipse: Edge of Light, a beautiful virtual reality exploration game being created by a team led by a former God of War designer, is now a Google Daydream timed exclusive. The game, which we first wrote about last year, is being developed by Jonathan Hawkins’ White Elk studio. During a talk today at SXSW in Austin, Jamil Moledina, game strategic lead at Google Play, showed off a short video for the game to highlight the sort of experiences that the company is looking for. He said the game doesn’t quite have a release date, but that it will be coming out soon, and that while Eclipse is initially exclusive to Daydream, it can later be released to other platforms. The game is a first-person exploration game set on a sentient planet with a “dark past,” according to White Elk’s website. A...

Outlast 2 denied rating in Australia because of sexual violence

Outlast 2 has been refused a rating by the Australian Classification Board because of a scene depicting sexual violence. Without a rating, the game cannot be sold in that country. The original Outlast, which was released on Windows PC in 2013. The asylum-based horror game reviewed well, including here at Polygon. The sequel takes place in Arizona and includes the original’s camcorder-based night vision feature. Players take on the role of Blake Langerman who, along with his wife, Lynn, are investigating the murder of a pregnant woman. From our preview at last year’s PAX East: On the surface, Outlast 2 is about finding your wife. It's almost certainly about uncovering the mystery of the misery in the Arizona desert. It's also about staying alive, because this farm from hell isn't...

War Thunder’s latest update promises a co-operative horde mode

War Thunder, the free-to-play vehicular combat game, has launched its first update of 2017. Called Assault, update 1.67 will add a kind of co-operative horde mode to the game for the first time and feature new maps, vehicles and animations. Assault Mode will task small groups of players with defending a single location against waves of tanks or aircraft. Enemies will approach from all sides, and players will have to be strategic about where and how they maneuver. Pilots will have an even tougher time, as wave after wave of enemy bombers at different altitudes will pound the area. A new arcade multiplayer map, called Guiana Highlands, is a fantastical plateau cut through with deep canyons. The cloud layer is actually below ground level, which sits at 6,000 feet. It promises some intense...

Nintendo Switch’s World of Goo shows off system’s Wii-style pointer controls

World of Goo is now out for the Nintendo Switch in North America for $9.99, and it’s one of the first games to take advantage of the Joy-Cons controllers’ pointer-style capabilities. While previous Nintendo systems required a sensor bar for this style of controls, the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Cons only require you to rest the controller on a solid surface for a moment before being able to use the controller as a sort of mouse on your television. You can watch the controller in action in the tweet below. This. is. Apple adding permanent indie games showcase to its App Store

Apple is betting heavily on independent game creators, adding a permanent section called Indie Showcase to its App Store, encouraging users to buy and play more independent games. The section kicked off today and will run indefinitely, according to Apple, featuring new games daily, along with highlighting older titles. The games are a mix of free-to-play and paid titles, all selected by the same editorial team that has been highlighting games through the App Store’s history. The permanent App Store installation was anticipated by a two-week promotion on indie games, with discounted titles and prominent placement for unique games, like Untame’s Mushroom 11 — a PC title from 2015 that just made the jump to mobile last week. “While independent works often set the creative tone, the...

Fire Emblem Heroes players already hate the game’s newest feature

Fire Emblem Heroes’ metagame could see some serious changes for the worse, all because of its newest feature. Players are in uproar because of how skill inheritance seems to widen the gap between those who spend money on building out their teams and those who don’t in the free-to-play game. The inherit skill feature allows for characters to gain the skills of other heroes in a someone’s collection. Its basic function is familiar to longtime Fire Emblem players, as the recent mainline games encourage players to shack up characters in the hopes of passing along their best skills to offspring. But that’s not quite how inheritance works in Fire Emblem Heroes, based on what mobile users have gleaned from the update thus far. Instead, it comes with very few limitations — heroes can inherit...

Horizon Zero Dawn sales top 2.6M units in under two weeks

Horizon Zero Dawn publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment sold more than 2.6 million copies of the game within its first two weeks of release, the company announced today. That represents worldwide sales of both retail and digital copies. Sony released the critically acclaimed PlayStation 4 exclusive on Feb. 28 in North America, on March 1 in Europe and on March 2 in Japan and Asia. The figure consists of sales data collected through March 12 in North America and Europe, and through March 13 in Asia. That gives Horizon Zero Dawn the best launch for a Sony-published new IP in PlayStation 4 history, the company said in a news release. For comparison’s sake, the well-established Uncharted franchise topped 2.7 million units with Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in its first week of release last...

Binding of Isaac leads pack of today’s new Nintendo Switch games

The Nintendo Switch eShop has been updated to include four more games today, March 16, giving console owners a lot to get excited for. Leading the charge of this week’s update is The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, but the other three titles now on sale are just as well-known to gamers well-versed in the indie gaming scene. The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ was originally slated to launch alongside the console earlier this month, but the procedurally generated shoot-’em-up arrives in good time regardless. It’s perhaps the most violent and difficult game currently available on the Switch, with tons of bosses to fight and chances to die by their hands. The game’s ending has also been reworked, and there’s a new playable character and chapter to make the game worth dipping back into. W...

Mass Effect: Andromeda’s character animations continue to be mocked online

Mass Effect: Andromeda will be released on March 21, but pre-release copies are already in the hands of critics and streamers. That’s not good news for BioWare, as people are having a field day capturing moments in which the in-game animation system breaks down. The facial animations, in particular, aren’t looking great. This isn’t the first time the game’s animations have proven to be a problem before launch. But the reports, videos and gifs that show off the game’s flawed animations have increased since review copies have been released. Reports are varied about how bad the issue is, and how much it affects players’ enjoyment of the game, but it does seem like the animations could have used a bit more time to be perfected. You can watch the game’s first hour if you’d like to get a...

Where to buy a Nintendo Switch (update)

Update #2: The Nintendo Switch has been out for about two weeks now, as of March 16, and systems remain hard to find. Your best bet right now is to call local retailers and ask when they expect to get restocked and how those lines will be handled. You can also bite the bullet and pick up a system from the gray market; the Nintendo Switch seems to be going for around $450 from third-party sellers on sites like Amazon. Prices on eBay also seem to be hovering around $450 or so for the system itself. GameStop is also offering bundles for $599.99 that are guaranteed to arrived by April 16, but that’s a lot of money to make sure you get a system. The bundle also includes some items that you may not want to buy, such as Just Dance 2017 and the Breath of the Wild strategy guide. Target...

Drawn to Death will be free for PlayStation Plus subscribers in April

Drawn to Death, the sketchy, stylized shooter for PlayStation 4 from The Bartlet Jones Supernatural Detective Agency, will be free at launch for PlayStation Plus subscribers, game director David Jaffe announced on the PlayStation Blog today. “I wanted to find a way to invite all of you PS Plus members into this experience and give you a look at what really excites me about games these days,” Jaffe wrote on the PlayStation Blog. “We’ve been working on Drawn To Death for nearly three years, and over time, it really has become this robust, highly competitive game — and we haven’t even talked about a lot of the new features yet. Needless to say, I thought you could all help us build an unbelievable community for the game.” Drawn to Death was originally planned as a free-to-play game, but...
