Nintendo Switch’s launch lineup is secretly great

The Nintendo Switch launched with a relatively paltry selection of games right now, but the biggest secret of the system’s first month is how good the game selection has become already. The console had the fantastic The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild ready to go right on launch day and — although one game doesn’t make a launch lineup great — having a truly amazing game in a huge franchise on day one is certainly a big advantage. If we’re playing the numbers game, though, the Switch already has more games than many older, widely beloved Nintendo consoles enjoyed at this point in their lifespans. Reddit user ChildofValhalla makes this argument with infographic below that’s spreading across the Nintendo subreddit. It’s an easy way to chart just how many games each system had ready...

The Animatrix is the franchise’s best movie and a starting point for The Matrix reboot

The Matrix is getting rebooted, and the big question on everyone’s mind is: What will that look like? Based on what sources told The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. is interested in pursuing stories within the Matrix universe without necessarily bringing back the original characters. The stories would revolve around different aspects of the war between machines and humans. It all sounds very intriguing, and those who’re thinking, “I’d love to get my hands on that right now,” well, you’re in luck. Because Warner Bros. already made that movie in 2003. It’s called The Animatrix, and it’s the best movie in the franchise. Here’s what Warner Bros. can take away from The Animatrix The Animatrix consists of a series of short films that take place in the Matrix universe, but they don’t fully...

Gaming's racist and sexist personalities aren't a new threat to children

“Do you watch PewDiePie?” I asked my oldest son. He shook his head no, but then asked why I would even bring it up. “Because he doesn’t understand why jokes about genocide aren’t funny,” I explained. My son goes to a German language school, and this wasn’t the first time this particular topic has come up. I don’t think PewDiePie is an anti-Semite as much as I think he’s a rich white guy who doesn’t understand that anti-Semitic humor isn’t the best way to make a point. PewDiePie is thoughtless, and his wealth and built-in following insulates him from having to look at any of his beliefs very hard. I wouldn’t be upset if my children were fans of his, but I would try to explain why shock humor is lazy and more likely to get you in trouble than get you a laugh. But Jon “JonTron” Jafari...

The design challenges of giving your cast two genders

Shovel Knight rethinks gender in retro games with Body Swap Mode (update)

Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club Games offered a “gender swap” stretch goal to its Kickstarter, promising to offer both male and female versions of the game’s main cast. The developer has written this blog post to discuss the design challenges of delivering on that promise. Shovel Knight is a game which draws on what we loved about designs from the 80s. But some of those 80s concepts can be a bit outmoded today, especially in regards to gender. After making some missteps with previous projects, we wanted to make sure that Shovel Knight was more inclusive and not so regressive. That’s one of the reasons we worked to make Shield Knight’s character an equal partner to Shovel Knight, someone he fights alongside at the end, instead of just a ‘damsel in distress.’ Capcom...

My Nintendo is a rewards program without any rewards

Keeping track of your Nintendo rewards used to be a fun way to earn all sorts of goodies by purchasing Nintendo systems and games, but those days are long gone. My Nintendo, the points-based platform that replaced Club Nintendo 12 months ago, has done little to prove its value to Nintendo players and shoppers. What My Nintendo’s done instead is make us nostalgic for the physical gifts offered by the older rewards program, Club Nintendo — and frustrated by its replacement’s paltry offerings. My Nintendo awards players two kinds of points, platinum and gold, for playing Nintendo games, using the company’s services and buying physical and digital products. That’s all typical stuff, and getting the points is easy enough. Mobile games give out platinum points quickly, for instance, while...

Darren Aronofsky’s Pi shouldn’t have succeeded, but it remains the director’s most important film

Today is Pi Day, and there’s no better way to celebrate it than talking about Darren Aronofsky’s disturbing, strange and influential, feature-length directorial debut, Pi. Pi is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. As an irrational number, it can’t be expressed a complete fraction but only as an infinite decimal. Since the number is infinite, most refer to the figure as 3.14159, or in simpler, more conversational cases, 3.14. Hence why March 14 — the fourteenth day of the third month — has become Pi Day. Pi has become more than just a number, however. Many mathematicians, artists and philosophers have spoken at length about why the figure is beautiful. In a series of drawings from 2015, artists imagined Pi as a visual spectacle. As Steven Strogratz wrote in The New...

Let’s talk about that ‘bad review’ of Breath of the Wild

This morning brought news that Jim Sterling, the well known video games raconteur who definitely does not participate in groupthink, was under attack. Jim could bait someone by reading a phone book in the wrong tone of voice, and everyone expects this so, dear God, what did he say this time. He gave The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild a 7 out of 10. Metacritic then folded that into whatever mumbo-jumbo informs its aggregation formula. Now the game is no longer tied for second place (with three others) at 98. It stands at 97, a score shared by eight over the long skein of video games history. Heaven forfend. Jim Sterling has forgotten more than I know about more games than I have ever played. We could do worse than to grant people the sincerity of their beliefs. And Jim isn't out...

I can’t finish Horizon Zero Dawn, but I know it’ll be perfect to go back to

I bought Horizon Zero Dawn knowing that I would not finish it immediately. Why? The answer is simple. I know myself. And I know that Mass Effect: Andromeda is coming out next Tuesday. Characters from Dragon Age: Inquisition, a game that came out in 20-fucking-14, are still rattling around in my brain, and another character-heavy action Bioware RPG is coming out next Tuesday. I haven’t started a new game since before January, because I’ve been too worried that I’ll start a new game and never finish it — because I’ll be playing Mass Effect. And yet — I bought an entire PlayStation so I could play Horizon Zero Dawn (OK, and also The Last Guardian, and eventually more Kingdom Hearts and The Last of Us). I’m setting up painstaking systems of traps for my machine enemies, leaping up cliff...

Meet the guy who spent over $4,000 on No Man’s Sky

I’m a pretty big fan of Hello Games’ No Man’s Sky, although that’s something of an understatement. I’ve played the game for over 400 hours so far, having explored 415 planets across 135 systems. I’ve been rather prolific on Twitter, sharing experiences and evangelizing the game out of a sense that most unhappy players don’t quite “get” it. I'm a denizen of the related Reddit subs and have gained some small renown there. My wife and 10-year-old daughter are likely very tired of hearing No Man’s Sky anecdotes. All told, I’ve spent around $4,000 on the game. This is how it happened. Adding it all up I first heard of No Man’s Sky in the summer of 2015. The previews looked pretty amazing and, as I had a PS4, I was excited for its release. I also grabbed Elite: Dangerous when it landed on...

Watching Logan in a theater packed full with children

My oldest son is 15. He’s very anxious to see Logan, the R-rated send-off to Hugh Jackman’s take on Wolverine. There were many children, some much younger than my son, in the theater where I saw it for myself last night. It was hard to enjoy the movie at times, wondering what those kids thought about what was going on in front of them. My first thought was that this was no movie for children. My second thought, near the film’s end, was whether they had any idea why the movie felt like one long punch in the gut for the adults in the audience. A history of violence The gore is only one reason Logan is such an intense film — and we’ll be getting into spoiler territory here — and it’s not even close to being the most concerning. Every X-Men movie had Wolverine killing a whole bunch of...

Zelda: Breath of the Wild with high stamina is the best

The Legend of Zelda: Breathe of the Wild has a massive, open world. In fact, the game’s vast landscape is one of its best features. There’s plenty of ways to journey around Hyrule, be it by paraglider, riding a ridiculously large horse or running and climbing everywhere you go. The latter is my favorite way to get around (and using this map really helps). So let’s talk about: Why building for stamina is the most entertaining way to play the game Why it’s actually wasteful to spend Spirit Orbs on Heart Containers There are no wrong ways to play, but maxing out your stamina as early as possible is a better way to play. Health is secondary There are 120 Shrines for you to locate in Breath of the Wild. Each one rewards you with a Spirit Orb. Four orbs allow you to either gain a Heart...

The quest for the ‘perfect’ Nintendo Switch

What does it take to get the perfect Nintendo Switch? It’s not like you have much of a choice right now; the system is supply-constrained to the point that it’s unlikely you would be able to return your console and get another one if you found an issue with your purchase. The problem is that many things can go wrong, which is leading to fans online comparing their systems to see who was able to get the “perfect” Switch. So how does one know if they have this mythical, ideal Switch? You want to get a system that doesn’t have any issues with the left Joy-Con losing connection, but you also want to get a system that doesn’t have any stuck or dead pixels. The latter happens with some regularity on just about any piece of electronics that has a screen, and there’s next to nothing you can...

Zodiac is still David Fincher’s best movie 10 years later

David Fincher has a long resume of successful, influential and critically-acclaimed films. From 1995’s Seven to 1999’s Fight Club to 2014’s Gone Girl, Fincher has created a body of work that defines his talent as a director and writer, but none so much as his most underrated film, the 2007 thriller Zodiac. It just so happens that Zodiac, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month, is also the best film Fincher has ever made. This can be taken as a strong sentiment. Movies are a subjective experience and while Zodiac may be my personal favorite, there’s no reason The Social Network can’t be yours. When talking about this piece, many Polygon writers and editors jumped in to defend what they believed to be Fincher’s best work. As I said to them, and as I’ll say to you, your...

Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s early game is easy to grind for great loot

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an enormous game with an open world full of places to explore and stuff that will kill you. These kinds of challenges will be familiar if you’ve played recent entries in the Elder Scrolls or Fallout series, but the game might be a bit overwhelming if you’re a casual Nintendo fan. I’m going to help by pointing out ways to increase your power quickly, as well as explain the most efficient ways to get the stuff you need to undertake the game’s challenges. This information could be seen as spoilers if you want to figure everything out for yourself, so this is your warning. The first step is ... Identify your needs It’s best to think about open world games as having two interwoven progression paths. The first is the narrative; following the quests...

Twitch introduces its own Twitter-like feed, but it needs to learn from Twitter’s mistakes

Twitch’s newest social feature, Pulse, is essentially a Facebook or Twitter feed tailored exclusively for the company’s millions of streamers and viewers. But like Twitter quickly realized — and has not been able to solve in the 11 years it has been around — having a platform that thrives on being able to interact with whoever you want, and essentially say whatever you want, will result in harassment that must be addressed. Solving a known problem The Pulse feature is described by Twitch as, “a place where streamers can post and engage with all of their followers and the greater Twitch community right from the Twitch front page,” essentially promoting a more intimate, ongoing connection between talent and fans. If the concept seems similar, that’s because it’s the same way Twitter...

Nintendo Switch launch sales are good news — but not great news yet

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has revealed that the Nintendo Switch has sold faster than any other Nintendo system in the Americas, which is pretty good news if you’re a Nintendo fan. But it’s not an indication that the company is bouncing back from the relatively tame hardware sales of the Wii U, at least not yet. The system, anecdotally, has sold out at most major retailers since launch. As of now, it also can’t be purchased online, except through third-party resellers. It would be bad news if Nintendo hadn’t sold out its initial allocation in the United States. Still, we have no way of knowing if Nintendo has managed to simply get more units on store shelves than it did for previous console launches. There’s also no way to tell if early launch week interest is...
