Heartbroken fans will be able to watch next-gen Naruto series on Hulu in April

Naruto came to an end yesterday after nearly 15 years on the air, but the world its characters inhabit isn’t going away forever. Viz Media confirmed today it acquired the rights to Boruto: Naruto Next Generation and has partnered with Hulu to bring it to American audiences. Viz Media also confirmed that the series premiere will simulcast at the same time that the show premieres in Japan on April 5. Boruto: Naruto Next Generation follows Naruto’s son, Boruto, and his friends as they train to become ninjas in the Hidden Leaf village. Naruto, who became the seventh Hokage (leader of his village) in the finale of Naruto Shippuden will be a part of the series but will not play as big of a role. Death Note fans divided on teaser, but agree Willem Dafoe is the best part

Netflix released its first teaser for the live-action adaptation of Death Note, and although some fans aren’t pleased with the direction the movie is heading in, nearly everyone agrees that the best part isn’t even in the trailer: Willem Dafoe’s interpretation of Ryuk. Dafoe is playing Ryuk, a Shinigami (grim reaper) who kickstarts a world of chaos after letting his death notebook fall into the hands of a high school student. The notebook gives the student, Light, the ability to kill whoever he wants, however he wants as long as he knows their name and can picture their face. The adaptation isn’t a strict adaptation in the way Ghost in the Shell is. The story has been taken out of Tokyo and moved to Seattle, for example, and director Adam Wingard has said the movie encompasses the...

One of anime’s most popular series, One-Punch Man, is now on Netflix

One-Punch Man has become one of the most popular anime series in recent years, and it’s finally able to stream on Netflix. One-Punch Man follows an unlikely looking superhero, named Saitama, who boasts incredible strength and can’t find anyone able to match his power. The show, which is largely a parody of the current superhero phenomenon pop culture is obsessed with, gained notoriety in-between October 2015 and the summer of 2016. The first season ran between October and December 2015 in Japan and was brought over in the summer of 2016 for Western audiences. The series started out as a web comic in 2009 — by an author who simply goes by the name One — and is currently ongoing. Netflix bringing One-Punch Man to Western audiences is a big step for the streaming service. CEO Reed...

This season’s biggest anime could secretly be its saddest

Kemono Friends has been setting viewing records since its debut earlier this winter, but it’s taken time for more particular anime fans to get into the computer-generated show. As its first season draws to a close, many viewers are finally on board — because it’s really starting to look like this run-of-the-mill, kind of ugly-looking anime is actually, secretly brilliant. The anime is part of a larger media franchise, including a mobile game and manga. It ostensibly follows a crew of cute girls living in a zoo, all of whom have been transformed from endangered and extinct species. One member of the group is trying to figure out just how she ended up in this strange place. Yet, since January, the first episode of Kemono Friends has been streamed more than three million times on major...

One of the most iconic, violent manga series is becoming a Netflix-exclusive anime

Netflix is producing one of its most ambitious anime projects yet after expressing interest to grow out its division. Devilman, created by Kiyoshi Nagai (better known as Go Nagai), initially ran as a manga between 1972 and 1973. It was also adapted into a television anime series in 1972. The manga, which follows a teenage boy named Akira Fudo, was praised by manga and anime lovers for its unapologetically violent story about demons, but it became the target for PTA groups in Japan as a result. It was considered one of the most violent manga series at the time, making it incredibly controversial. Devilman would also go on to influence series like Neon Genesis Evangelion and Berserk. The manga and anime also became the base for a number of video games, including Devilman, which was...

Crunchyroll video quality takes major dip, leaving users furious

Members of Crunchyroll, the most popular dedicated anime streaming service, called out the service this past weekend for what appeared to be an intentional reduction in video quality. That’s not quite the case, as a Crunchyroll representative told Polygon — but not until after legions of anime fans made their disdain for the poor quality streams known to the service’s customer support line. “To keep up with our growing audience and the many ways people are consuming anime, we've been working on a new infrastructure to better support viewing,” a statement to Polygon reads. “Last weekend, new episodes were released through the new infrastructure to test the system's ability to serve video to large portions of the Crunchyroll audience. The encodes that some users experienced were not up...

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure live-action movie gets first look in new trailer

One of Japan’s most acclaimed directors is bringing one of the most popular anime today to the big screen, and the live-action trailer is here. Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) is tackling JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, a popular anime that began in 2012. The anime is based on a manga of the same name, which was released in 1987, created by Hirohiko Araki. The series follows the Joestar family, who are tasked with taking down different enemies using their unique supernatural abilities. The new, 30-second trailer doesn’t do much to introduce the characters, but it does set the tone of the film. It’s important to note that the live-action film is called JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable Chapter 1, which seems to hint that there are plans for future installments in the...

Crunchyroll’s million-subscriber milestone proves anime streaming isn’t just niche

Few anime-exclusive streaming services are as well-known or widely used as Crunchyroll. The popular platform recently celebrated its one millionth paid subscriber, which may seem small when compared to Netflix or Hulu. For a streaming site that predominantly hosts anime and makes the bulk of its content available to users for free, however, getting one million fans to pay for subscriptions is a big deal. “Crunchyroll achieved record growth in 2016, charting a 36 percent increase in paid subscribers in the last 12 months,” the company announced in a press release. Overall, more than 20 million users are now registered to use the site. In January 2016, Crunchyroll reportedly had more than 750,000 paid members; that was a big change over November 2014, when it was said to have 400,000...
