Herbie, the spunky little Volks beetle with a mind of his own, gets romantic buildup when he becomes a Romeo on wheels infatuated with a flirty powder-blue Lancia named Giselle, as both participate in the annual Paris to Monte Carlo road rally. Herbie is reunited with his original owner and driver, Dean Jones, a former second-rate racer whom he once adopted and won a flock of races for in the US.
Together again, Jones finds once more he is at the mercy of Herbie, who time and again takes matters into his own hands for often slapstick and mirthful effect as they roar toward their destination.
Herbie performs in the qualifying races outside Paris where he falls hood over wheels in love with the smart Lancia, driven by Julie Sommars who takes Jones’ eye as well.
