“It can be a glorified practice or take on a more of a game-like atmosphere, just depending how you choose to orchestrate it.

“Some teams do one on one, then seven on seven, and then scrimmage a little bit. Other coaches do more.”

McFarland said he and El Monte coach Joel Sanchez have been playing phone tag and haven’t figured out what exactly it is they want to do Friday, but McFarland has his thoughts.

“I prefer game situations,” he said. “I prefer to move the football and play 11 on 11. I’m sure we’ll compromise on how to get it done.”

The scrimmage, which McFarland said has been publicized on campus and in the community, will be full contact, except when it comes to the quarterback.

Business as usual

Anthony White broke tradition in his first and only year as Temple City’s coach last season when he opted to place horn decals on Temple City’s helmets before the Rams won their first game, when the custom at the storied program had always been to wait until their first win.

McFarland was asked during spring practice whether he would acquiesce to tradition or do otherwise.

“That’s the furthest thing from my mind right now,” McFarland answered at the time.

With the season opener fast approaching, McFarland has now taken a stand.

“We’re going with tradition,” McFarland said.

“We’re going to wait until we win a game.”

McFarland explained his rationale.

“When a place like Temple City has a tradition like this,” he said, “it’s important that you acknowledge it and continue with it.”

Venue change

The venue for Blair’s football game against Fulton Prep on Thursday night at 7 has been changed to Pasadena High.

The game previously was scheduled to be played at Muir.
