For larger lotteries, like Mega Millions or Powerball, half the ticket revenue — and those games are nationwide — goes toward the lottery's prize pool.

But the lottery is also required to disperse money, based on revenues, to the state for distribution to schools. That includes local schools as well as the UC, CSU and Community College systems.

In the 2021-22 fiscal year, the latest figures statewide that we could get, the lottery made more than eight billion dollars. Two billion of that went to schools across California.

Looking at counties in Northern California, the money is, obviously, less.

    • Sacramento County received $44.8 million
    • San Joaquin County received $26.8 million
    • And Stanislaus County received $18.8 million

When you drill down into the districts, the numbers vary, and that comes from how the money is distributed.

The California State Controller's Office distributes the money to the districts and those dollar figures are determined by attendance.

Using Sacramento County, the largest districts' distribution looks like this:

    • Elk Grove Unified, which is the largest - $9.4 million in the first two quarters of the fiscal year
    • Sacramento Unified - $5.1 million
    • San Juan Unified - $5.5 million
    • Twin Rivers - $2.8 million
    • Folsom Cordova - $3.4 million

In 2020, the state auditor found that the lottery had not been adjusting the payments to schools to go with increased revenues, determining that the state was owed $36 million. Since then, the Lottery Commission has put recommendations from the auditor in place.
