What Is ‘Frankenstein’’s Plot?

Well, you can read Shelley’s book to find that out, since this adaptation is pretty faithful to her 1818 novel. But here’s a handy synopsis:
Victor Frankenstein (Isaac) is a gifted scientist obsessed with beating death. He thinks he can do it, but he’ll need the financial backing of Henrich Harlander (Waltz), the emotional support of his devoted fiancée, Elizabeth (Goth), some spare body parts and a lightning bolt or two.
It’s no spoiler to reveal that Victor succeeds in breathing life into his stitched-together Creature, but as it gains awareness, it experiences all-too-human emotions of loneliness and rage at being different and feared by others. Victor soon loses control over his invention, sparking a chain of events that leads to tragedy for all involved.

Is ‘Frankenstein’ Worth Watching?

Yes. The pairing of del Toro and Shelley’s story makes sense, and the Pan’s Labyrinth director doesn’t disappoint in bringing out all the weirdness inherent in Frankenstein. The cinematography by Dan Laustsen is superb, with Victor’s gothic world of imposing cathedrals, dark laboratories and shadowy woods brought to vivid life.
The cast is top-notch too, with Isaac convincingly embodying Victor’s unyielding drive to play God and master death. Goth was made to be a del Toro heroine, and she looks right at home wearing outlandish, Georgian-era costumes while nursing both Victor and the Creature’s bruised egos. The biggest surprise, however, is Elordi: A late replacement for Andrew Garfield, who had to bow out due to scheduling conflicts, he finds the wounded heart at the center of his misunderstood monster and makes the Creature worthy of your pity.

You’ve probably seen at least one version of Frankenstein before. While there have been plenty of good ones (Bride of Frankenstein remains a favorite) and a few bad ones (avoid the Kenneth Branagh one at all costs), del Toro’s reimagining ranks as one of the best. Simultaneously faithful yet boldly original, it’s a monster movie that’s really a tragic romance at heart.
